Maria Lígia Conti

Her dissertation for the master’s degree was a study on the first History books printed in Brazil in the 19thth century (before that, all books were printed in the Portugal). Her research aimed to check how the black African people who had been brought to the country as slaves were pictured in those History books.

She has been a member of the Center of Afro-Brazilian Culture (NUCAB) at the University of Sorocaba (SP/Brazil) for the past 26 years. In 2012 she worked as a volunteer English teacher in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and had a chance to visit South Africa. She made good friends in Ethiopia and became a voice for Africa in Brazil – always having a good word to say about the continent, its people, its culinary and cultures.

Ligia is presently an ambassador for the Girl Child and her Long Walk to Freedom (https://girlchildlongwalk.org) a project that aims to raise awareness and show how faith can contribute to fight against the oppression imposed on girls and women all over the world, along human history.
